- Spanish Textbook - Keep it at home. You will never have to bring your textbook to school. I have a class set that we will use when we do activities from the textbook while in the classroom.
- Worbooks - You will receive two workbooks. Cuaderno de Vocabulario y Gramática and another one called Cuaderno de Actividades. Both of these workbooks should be with you at all times. I suggest you keep them in your backpack as you will be using them for many exercises in class and at home.
- Spanish - English Dictionary - Small pocket size so you are able to keep it in your backpack also. If at any point during an in class activity there is a word you do not understand you should look it up in the dictionary.
- 3" 3 Ring Spanish I Binder - DO NOT BRING THIS TO SCHOOL. Your binder will be used to archive all of your notes, papers, worksheets etc. that you receive in class. This is where you will store all of the important information you need to review for your exams. It is also a binder that you will use when you are in Spanish II and you have doubts or questions regarding any Spanish I concept.
- Dividers - I highly suggest you divide your binder by chapters. It will make it much easier when you have to study.
- Work in Progress Folder - This is the folder you will need to keep in your backpack at all times. You will use it to keep your notes, papers, worksheets and information from the chapter that we are covering. After we take the chapter test you will be able to empty your Work in Progress Folder and archive all of that information on your Spanish I Binder.
- Copy Paper - Always keep 5 sheets of Copy Paper in your Work in Progress Folder. Sometimes we will do activities that will require this kind of paper.
If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me.

Welcome Parents/Guardians
Parents/Guardians,
I would like to welcome you to the Spanish Class I Blog for parents and students enrolled in Ms. Bohórquez's Class.
This blog is one of the resources you will be able to access to find out what is going on in Spanish Class.
Spanish I is a rigorous high school credit course that will introduce your child to vocabulary, grammatical structures, and the culture of Spanish-speaking countries.
Students will have homework almost every night. Very rarely will they have a day without an assignment, however, on days they do not have homework they are always encouraged to continue practicing what we are learning in class. Here at Markham Woods, we follow the same procedures as the high schools we feed into, therefore, students will be taking 9 weeks exams and semester exams. Students should always be able to recall the content from previous chapters. In Spanish I, every chapter builds off of the previous chapter. If a student is not successful in Chapter 3, most likely they will struggle in Chapter 4. With this in mind, please encourage your child to review and practice the content from the previous chapters.
Parents generally ask what can they do to help their student as they go through Spanish I so here are a few suggestions:
1. Please monitor your child's homework (memorization of vocabulary/grammar), and grades.
2. Vocabulary needs to be learned when it is assigned so it can be properly reinforced through classroom usage. Your son / daughter should be periodically reviewing past vocabulary words on their own in order to keep them fresh in their mind and to ensure long-term retention. Encourage you child to practice new and old vocabulary words.
3. Encourage your son/daughter to use a planner. Every Monday before I start class, students are given about 10 minutes to write down the agenda for the week. The Agenda is always written on the left side of the white board and it provides information on homework, projects, quizzes, and tests.
4. If you use Twitter please follow my class tweets @bohorqueztweets . I will periodically post reminders for major grades like projects, quizzes, tests and exams. You can also access a live feed of my tweets through this blog (bohorqueztweets on the right).
5. Use the Blog to access the Class Calendar. You can even subscribe to it and receive and email when new assignments are posted. I will do this on a weekly basis.
6. Students will have several technology projects throughout the school year. I will announce these projects a week or two in advance. Please encourage your son/daughter to start working right away to avoid technology malfunction. If his/her computer is not working at home they have two options: a) Come before school and use the Classroom Computer or b) Work on the Paper Version of the project.
As always, feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have.
I am looking forward to a successful school year.
~ Mrs. Catalina Bohórquez

Welcome / Bienvenidos
Welcome to a new and exciting school year. I am thrilled you have decided to take Spanish and I am looking forward to meeting you. I hope you know that learning a world language is not something that is only "required" for graduation. Every day our world continues to develop and people continue to create new technologies. As this happens we, as individuals, are expected to work, collaborate, and communicate with people from all over the world.
Over the course of this year you will be actively participating by using the language through different games, songs, projects, and uses of technology. Warning: There will be times when you feel you are back in Kindergarten - You will be learning some things that 4 and 5 year olds are learning in their native language. So expect to sing and dance. Some other times you will feel like a movie director in Hollywood - You will be creating videos, songs, etc.
If you attended "Meet your Teacher Day" on Wednesday August 11th, you received a packet with information. If you did not attend but one of your friends referred you to the Class Blog please download the Welcome Packet by clicking here.
To obtain more information about the course, please access the Class Syllabus by clicking here. I will provide a copy the 1st week of school. The last pages need to be signed and returned. If you misplace your syllabus feel free to print another copy.
Now that I've given you a little background about the course you can look at the following "Glogster" to learn a little bit about myself.
In Spanish class, you will be primarily working in groups. You are encouraged to discuss the content with your teammates and also to get to know them a little better. Spanish Class will be easier if you help each other. To earn a FREE Homework Pass please leave a comment below answering the following questions. The deadline is Friday August 20th by midnight.
Tell us a little bit about yourself:
1. What do you like to do in your free time?
2. If you could visit any country in the world where would you like to go and why?
